Scotland Day Five / by Dave Hileman

Glencoe is a spectacular valley ringed by steep mountains that begin at valley level treed and then ascend past the tree line to a variety of shapes and cliffs. It is the scene of a terrible massacre when in the late 1600’s soldiers of Argyle billeted with many of the people of the valley, a common custom, but after ten days of hospitality orders came to kill everyone. Many escaped but into a freezing cold winter where an unknown number perished. This broke the clan and it was generations in recovery. There is also a turf house here rebuilt in the style that would have been common from about 1500 with people still living in them into the early 1900’s. Tough people.

We drove the length of the valley, spent time at the visitor center, took a guided tour of the turf house and added an amazing drive down the Glen Etive and the Etive River. Many scenes from Harry Potter, some from a James Bond movie, and more from Bravehart were filmed here. It was about a 7 mile single track road with wonderful views.
