Short and Challenging by Dave Hileman

I took a hike, about 3/4 of a mile each way at Cedar Bluffs in Central Indiana. We are visiting in Bloomington. The creek was full and flowing fast, there has been a lot of rain here with flooding in many places. This was difficult because the trail was hopping along the rocks on the shore. No real path. I don’t know if there is one that was covered by the water or if this is the norm. Very careful to avoid turning an ankle.

The cliffs wee about 80 feet high.

These cannon are mounted on a wall at Fort Donelson in Western Tennessee protecting the Tennessee River. The fort was taken by Grant and provided access for the union to begin operations on the Mississippi toward Vicksburg.

Moores Creek Bridge Battlefield by Dave Hileman

This quiet, almost unknown, battlefield was the site of one of the earliest victories of the American Revolution by the patriots. It is also the last broadsword charge of the Scottish Highland Regiment. The bridge in the photo is reconstructed and was the focal point of the battle in February of 1776, 250 years ago. You can find Moores Creek in Eastern North Carolina near the town of Currie.

There is also a unique monument here to the women of the American Revolution.

Johnson University by Dave Hileman

This is the college I graduated from in 1978. The campus is quite beautiful. When I arrived here this pond was two years or so removed from being used by cattle that were raised on campus. Now a bit more picturesque. An excellent school with degrees in many disciplines located a few miles south of Knoxville in the Kimberlin Heights area beside a long stretch of the French Broad River.

Perspective by Dave Hileman

This view is on the mountain ridge on the east side of Death Valley. The couple in the foreground gives a sense of the scale of this place. Just past them you a see a bit of the Golden Trail that leads to the floor of the valley - about a 2.5 mile walk. The colors, the heat, the sense of grandeur is hard to match.

Cedar Waxwing by Dave Hileman

This colorful bird usually is found in flocks stripping berries off a tree or a bunch of bushes. This one posed royally near a trail in Virgina’s Blue Ridge Parkway.

All you hear at the Tomb of the Unknowns are the steps and arms process of the guard. And don’t upset the guard by being less than respectful. Really don’t!

Yacht Club by Dave Hileman

A lovely trio of desserts at the Yacht Club in Disney Springs. Chocolate waffles with different syrups, whipped cream, chocolate shards. Excellent treat from long ago. A post I found in the “drafts” and not posted when written.

Gear by Dave Hileman

I posted the tower stairs of the Martin Van Buren house in Kinderhook, NY earlier this week. This was some of his fishing gear. He tied the lures. Fly fishing in the steam on his farm was he favorite activity and engaged in doing so a lot.. He also walked to the Potomac when he was President and could be found there many mornings. A bit different than today!
