Falling Water - last couple of shots by Dave Hileman

I have written a lot about the house but here are a couple shots I did not post earlier. The lower deck is bisected by the living area but extends quite a distant on either side and also has stairs to the stream below. You can see the stairs in the last photo. The upper deck in one of three as each small bedroom has a large private deck. It was designed by FLW to encourage outdoor living. The pool is located up the hill from the main house beside the guest house. It is fed by a mountain stream meaning that it is never warm! You can also see by the color change on the deck that the restoration work is not quite finished.

Jill and I were fascinated by the beautiful scenery around Scotland. The rich greens of the fields dotted with sheep, the deep blues of the sea and rugged rock walls were often in view as we navigated the coast of Scotland from the Western side across the top and down the East coast. Great memories.

Glacial River by Dave Hileman

This river of slow moving ice was photographed from a small plane over the Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. I was there in 2019 and the small plane was a most fabulous way to view this vast icy land and seascape. Moments never forgotten.

Ascend by Dave Hileman

This is a shot from the Monongahela Incline. It is located across the street from Station Square in Pittsburgh and takes you up Mount Washington where you can explore some of the city or just enjoy a spectacular view of downtown and miles around it from platforms that line the hill top. There are also fine restaurants here. The incline has been operating for 150 years.

Western Meadowlark by Dave Hileman

This photo has a bit of an Audobon aspect to it. If you have ever seen one of the original portfolios of Audubon’s prints of American birds, perhaps it will appear that way to you as well. He often showed the bird in a natural setting but simplified frequently to a common plant or selection that represented the bird’s habitat and a neutral background were in most of his prints. This bird was photographed in Montana.

Devil's Tower by Dave Hileman

This is an impressive volcanic lava flow that somehow did not escape the top vent that we usually associate with a volcano but hit a heavy layer of rock and cooled in site. But more interesting than the how is how striking it is rising from the surrounding landscape. It is composed and many 4, 5, 6 and even 7 sided columns that are compressed together but not solid, you can see this where some have fallen. More on this National Monument (the first such designation) later.

Lark Sparrow (3 photos) by Dave Hileman

This was my first encounter with a Lark Sparrow and, of course, it added to my life list. This bird was photographed in the grasslands near the Missouri River in Eastern Nebraska. The Lark Sparrow has a beautiful song.

Classic View - Classic Home by Dave Hileman

This is Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous home, Falling Water, built in the 1930’s for the Kaufmann family of the Kaufmann Department store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This mountain retreat home for them is near Ohiopyle in the Laurel Highlands of PA. Built with an initial budget of 20 -30,000 dollars, the final cost was 155,000 plus landscaping, plus furnishings and more. Don’t expect FLW to meet your budget he literally did not care. He also built the house over a waterfall instead of where the family wanted the house so they could see the waterfall. Wright told them they would get bored of the view! I guess if you get a genius to design your home you get mainly what said genius wants. The house is quite amazing and has just undergone extensive work to support portions of the almost 100 year-old icon. Some of the work is not complete but when we were there the scaffolding had just been removed. I will share some additional photos of the house later this week. Patience by Dave Hileman

These two Turkey Vultures in the Badlands National Park are waiting. What for, you ask? Perhaps the next unprepared hiker! This is in South Dakota and really dramatic scenery with lots of wild life. Would love to spend more time here.
