Solitude, Silence and Stillness by Dave Hileman

“The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord… Let them sit alone in silence beneath the Lord’s demands.”

Lamentations 3:25, 26, 28 NLT

I will absolutely miss... by Dave Hileman

…. this market if it does not survive the shutdown. In central Lancaster this place has been open since the late 18th century and I expect it will continue. I just hope the experience does not change so much that it is not recognized any longer. One of my favorite things to do when passing by this area of the world. And the people who populate the stalls are wonderful, i sure wish them well.

Edit Update: Since I wrote this I found out that the market is indeed already open. They have limited the number of customers and you no longer pick your own produce. Also they have adjusted where you wait for your order. And, as a note, the market dates back to 1730, so coming up on 300 years. Wow.

Quiet Corner for a Quiet People by Dave Hileman

This is an Amish owned workshop out behind an old farm house in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I like the push bikes parked outside while inside the shop everything is powered by compressed air. Lovely place to spend time and we are missing being there. So, who knows it may end up being part of the summer travel.

African Church by Dave Hileman

This church in Boston is a part of the African American tour. It was known as the African Church and was a keystone in the pre-Civil War anti-clavery movement and later the Civil Rights movement.

“After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:31 NLT

Wild by Dave Hileman

This wild pony is along the bay side of Cape Lookout National Seashore on the southern end of the Outer Banks. A lovely place with open spaces and lots of shells.

Bandits at 7:09 by Dave Hileman

Actually the Bandit Flyover Team based in Raleigh flying vintage aircraft to honor “the flag.” In this case the flyover was to celebrate the work of the folks on the frontline of the virus battle. These planes are about 1000 feet over the Rex Hospital that is just a couple of miles from my house in Raleigh. It was a nice night and a neat tribute. And they hit the scheduled time on the dot at 7:09 Thursday evening.

Ladies & Crowns (2 photos) by Dave Hileman

Several years ago I took some photos at the National Folk Music Festival held in Richmond, VA, that year. One of the features was a fashion show of a tradition in the African American community of fancy hats worn for Sunday services, or, as they were called at the festival, “crowns.” There were several on display in a booth but later in the afternoon several women put on a bit of a fashion show waring their Sunday best hats. Here are two of them.

Mom and Cub by Dave Hileman

This ought to have been posted yesterday. The cub is sim months old and never too far from mom. We enjoyed watching the youngster chase fish and birds and catch a stick which seemed a great game. I was at Lake Clark on an airboat with Tom Light. What an great adventure that day.

Re-View Number Seven by Dave Hileman

This photo is unique. Not that there are not others that might be very similar but this one was a moment in time and I was all alone on the shore. We were traveling on the Alcan Highway in the Yukon and stopped along this lake. It is a dying lake because of an earthquake years ago that diverted the river into another area. And it is usually quite windy along here. So we stopped and the walk to the shore was a distance and strewn with rocks and a bit of mud, almost did not go. But the wind had stopped and the view was compelling where we were but I wanted the reflection. So, I carefully picked my way down to the shore. There were no footprints, no people about - one car stopped in the parking area in the 30/40 minutes we were there and then left. I got to the shore set my tipod up and took a shot, than a second and third, made a couple of small adjustments and took two more. By the time I got back to the parking area the wind and picked up the reflection was gone and before we were two miles away dark clouds rolled in and the rain started. So, I hope you enjoy this unique photo, it is one of my favorite images from our trip.

“For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” 2 Corinthians 3:18,18 NLT

Re-View Number Six by Dave Hileman

This one is quite different from the first time I posted. Just for the learning experience, I converted to B&W and added a soft, foggy backdrop to the bird who stands in contrast to the rest of the scene.

"Mirror Mirror..." by Dave Hileman

… for more than half a century there has been only one answer for me. Today we celebrate our 49th Anniversary. The wedding took place at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland on May 8th, 1971, the week before Cindy graduated from the college. She is framed in a mirror that I guess was in the chapel somewhere. The flowers she has were picked by our minister’s wife along the side of the road as they traveled from Pittsburgh to Frederick. Cindy made her wedding dress and her Aunt Timmie made yards of tatting that was incorporated into the dress.

This photo is one of the few we have as we had two volunteer photographers who were glad to shoot a roll of film but not too many came out and several are not in focus. But they bring back great memories so they feel perfect. The enforced lock-in has altered the agenda for today but I do have a celebration planned that must remain undisclosed this morning.

Re- View Number Five by Dave Hileman

I like this photo as much for the memory as for the image. This is taken about 3 miles up this valley on Cathedral Mountain in Denali. It was an off the trail adventure, just Cindy and me and our bear spray. It was a stunning view made even more interesting by the fact we were alone in this vast area. If you look really closely, you can see Cindy in the right portion of the photo just below the ridge on the green tundra. She is wearing a red jacket. I am higher on the ridge seeing if this was near the top but it was only another false summit. We choose to start back at this point in the hike and followed a tiny stream back to the Denali Highway and got on the next bus heading back to our campground.

Re- View Number Four by Dave Hileman

Joshua Tree National Park exceeded my expectations - it was beautiful and still and full of interesting rock formations (No u2 however), and a nice hike that led to a lake, just an amazing place. It was pretty hot when we were there but not even close to what it is in the summer. Nice towns close and an old western movie/TV town that was fun to explore.

Re- View Number Three by Dave Hileman

This one just appeals to me from several standpoints. I love the fact I got it late at night, I love the subtile image of the Washington Monument at the end of the sweeping curve of the Martin Luther King Memorial. The figure at the end gives it scale. I appreciate that Washington was so instrumental in securing America’s independence as MLKjr was in ending the awful treatment of African Americans from the Jim Crow era. And it was a gorgeous, warm, enveloping kind of night.
